Symptoms of childhood atopic dermatitis
Atopic dermatitis is a disease that many children suffer from babies. It is a skin disease that usually appears on the face and body of babies, children and adults . An uncomfortable disease that usually causes itching and much discomfort.
People with atopic dermatitis suffer abnormalities and skin lesions that cause an uncomfortable itching. We will try to look in this article for the symptoms of atopic dermatitis that currently affects many babies and young children.
The origin of atopic dermatitis
Although increasingly common, dermatologists have not yet found the origin of atopic dermatitis . However, it is known that there are a number of factors that can influence the appearance of this skin disease:
• If either parent has asthma, atopic dermatitis or hay fever, children will be more likely to have atopic dermatitis.
• The older the mother is at the time of giving birth to her child , the risk of developing atopic dermatitis increases.
• Cold environments and cities with pollution also have many patients with atopic dermatitis.
• It is also related to food allergies, tobacco, wool and nylon fabrics, dust ...
Symptoms of atopic dermatitis
Dermatitis may appear already in the first months of life of some babies . Parents will find in their body red , exudative or crusty lesions on the face, the scalp, in the diaper area, on the hands, arms, feet or legs.Normally, dermatitis usually disappears at 3 or 4 years of age but it can manifest itself again during childhood and develop later. Also atopic dermatitis can disappear forever and children do not suffer from this uncomfortable disease.
Symptoms usually itchy very intense and prolonged that bothers babies and children. You can also find various lesions that are distributed in a characteristic way, invading face, neck and the upper part of the trunk. They can also develop in the folds of the elbows and knees.
Atopic dermatitis according to age
Atopic dermatitis in infants usually begins over five months of life . Infants may have seborrheic eczema lesions that, little by little, can evolve into dermatitis. It can also disappear definitely.
Infant dermatitis is usually located on the face , except in the area around the eyes, mouth and nose . It can also appear on the ears, the back of the hands or the scalp . The pruritus/itchy remains constantly being very annoying for the baby who usually enters a state of constant nervousness.
Childhood atopic dermatitis usually begins around two years and usually lasts until 7 years or continues until puberty . Lesions are frequent in the elbows and knees, although they can also manifest in other areas of the body. As in that of the infant, it can often disappear and the child does not suffer the disease again.
Many of the children who have suffered atopic dermatitis in childhood still have the disease in adulthood and have to follow a medical treatment for life.
Dermatitis Prevention
As the causes are not known so far, it is difficult to prevent the disease . The only thing that can be done is to modify some habits in children such as trying to get away from tobacco smoke whenever possible or taking care of the clothes that the child uses to dress avoiding wool and nylon garments and trying to make them cotton. It can also be a good idea to avoid wet and cold climates and cities full of pollution . Dry and hot climates, however, benefit patients with atopic dermatitis, whether adults or children.
If we believe that our son or daughter may have the disease we should take him to the pediatrician so that if he considers it he will refer us to the specialist as soon as possible . There are several medical treatments to improve the quality of life from corticosteroids to therapies with oral antihistamines. The sooner we remedy it, the children will suffer less from their uncomfortable symptoms.
